A. University Introduction
Shandong University, under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, is a key comprehensive university with a long history, a variety of disciplines, strong academic strength, and distinctive characteristics, which has great influence both at home and abroad. Shandong University is a member university of Project 211 and Project 985, two national key construction projects to support the development of high-quality universities.
Shandong University is one of the initiative universities of modern Chinese higher education. Its medical school, established in 1864, signified the beginning of modern Chinese higher education. Its main body, Shandong Imperial College (Shandong Da Xue Tang) established in 1901, was the second national university in China, only after the Imperial University of Peking. Moreover, it was the first university to be established and run in accordance with a chartered constitution.
Shandong University now comprises 8 campuses (Jinan Central Campus, Hongjialou Campus, Baotuquan Campus, Qianfoshan Campus, Software Park Campus, Xinglongshan Campus, Qingdao Campus and Weihai Campus) in three different cities (Jinan, Qingdao and Weihai), covering an area of over 533 hectares (including 200 hectares of the Qingdao campus).
The university currently enjoys a teaching and administrative staff of 7,782 (not including affiliated hospitals). Its full-time student population totals up to 60,000, of which 41,103 are full-time undergraduates, 16,607 are postgraduates and 1,813 are international students. It also has an excellent faculty team of 1,107 professors, including 907 doctoral supervisors.
The financial mathematics, crystal materials, condensed matter physics, colloid and surface chemistry, micro-biology, machinery, material science, cardiovascular functional recovery, new drug manufacturing, and classical Chinese philosophy have all listed in the first-class level within the country, and some are even known abroad.

Entry Requirement
There is no requirement for studying Chinese language, while for academic courses, students should meet the following requirement:
GPA: 70/100, 2.3/4.0
Chinese taught academic courses: HSK 4 and above
English taught academic courses:
No proof of English proficiency is required. But it is strongly recommended for the exchange students to reach the level of :
TOEFL: a minimum of 80 (internet)
IELTS: a minimum of 6

Deadline: May 30 for autumn semester and
Nov. 30 for spring semester.
Application Period
Exchange students should apply through the online application system.
For spring semester, it opens from September 15 to November 30.
For autumn semester, it opens from March 4 to May 30.

4. Log into the application system. Select Program“Intercollegiate Exchange Student”, and you will see a list of programs. Choose the one that suits you most considering duration and instruction language, and then start the application.

Language of Instruction
Most of courses are taught in Chinese. There are a number of courses taught in English in economics, management, political sciences, law, mechanical engineering, etc.
Workload per Semester
Undergraduates
Exchange students usually take 3 to 5 courses per semester based on 2 or 3 credits percourse (subjected to home university’s approval). No minimum workload isrequired. Maximum workload allowed is 6 courses per semester.
Graduates
Graduate students shall take a minimum of 1 postgraduate course or do research supervised by Shandong University faculty members.

Note:
Six schools are on Qingdao campus: Political Sciences and Public Administration, Law, Life Sciences, Information Sciences and Engineering, Computer Sciences and Engineering, and Environmental Sciences and Engineering.
Others remain in Jinan.

According to the student exchange agreement,the tuition fee in the host university will be waived for the exchange students. However, the students needtopay tuition fees to his/her home university.

G. Visa
Visa Type
Student Visa (X1 Visa) is issued to an alien who comes to China for study, advanced studies or intern practice for a period of more than six months.

Insurance Requirement
Insurance is compulsory for SDU study.

Airport Pick-up Service
We will offer free pick-up service for exchange students arriving on registration day from Jinan International Airport and Jinan Railway station.
If you need a pickup, please send back your flight information to us at least 2 weeks before arrival.
Buddy Program
From year 2010 on, Shandong University launches Buddy Program for incoming international exchange students. The volunteers are all selected by the university to match with exchange students, which pairs new international students with current students who provide the friendly face, helping hand, and first Chinese friendship that can make a world of difference for new arrivals.
